Thursday, March 15, 2012- In love with a MIRACLE
Oh, I LOVE this little boy!
I have cared for a number of sick, abandoned, abused, neglected and malnourished children in my time in Tanzania - and I always have utmost faith that a lot of love and some good care and nourishment can revert almost all previous damage done to a young child.
But it takes time. It takes time to build relationships and trust with children so traumatised and hurt. It takes some days, weeks, or even months for them to let their guard down and let you in. Even young babies who have been severely neglected are able to resist attention and avert eye contact for a few days - and the older the child, usually, the longer it takes.
Baraka Miracle is one of the saddest cases of neglect / abuse we have had at the Baby Home. I knew it would take a long time for his physical wounds to heal, but I also believed it would take some time for his inner pain to heal.
But this little boy astounds me! He is so happy and he laughs all day! He LOVES being loved and is so brave when I have to change his dressings or put ointment on his wounds. And this morning - he walked! He just stood up and walked!
Just look at that smile! Just 2 days at Forever Angels and already he knows love and happiness.
I love you Baraka - you are my mini Miracle!
Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers for this little man. He is absolutely georgus and will be just fine! |

Tuesday, March 13, 2012- Baraka Miracle is home!We are so thrilled to let you all know that Baraka Miracle is now at home with us at Forever Angels!
He was discharged from Bugando this morning and we are so pleased to have him in our care. Thank you so much to Rob, Shannon, Katrina and Jill - all American Doctors who have been giving us advice and helping him while he has been in hospital - we are so greatful for your advice and support. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to Selina (one of our Mamma's) who has been in hospital with him 24 hours a day, all week caring for him - catching 10 minutes sleep here and there when she can. And thank you to Rachel (one of our volunteers) who has spent all her free time at Bugando helping to feed him, playing with him and giving him lots of love.
Baraka is staying in our Tiny Baby house for a while while he recouperates. It is quieter and there is no chance of another child crawling over him or falling on him or hitting his fragile body and wounds.
Already Baraka has been showered with love from my amazing Tiny Baby Mammas and he is playing with toys and smiling at everyone and eating well. This child just melts your heart. What he has been through in his little life just does not bear thinking about - but a week of love and good care and he is trusting again and smiling. He is such a brave little thing - he must be in agony with all his wounds - yet he barely cries and is just content to be in loving company. We are so happy to have this little man at Forever Angels and we know he will recover physically and mentally in our care. Please keep him in your thoughts over the coming weeks. |

Thank you SO much to Stella, a long term Volunteer who lives here in Tanzania and has helped out at the Baby Home for as long as I can remember.....the children had a wonderful birthday party last week!
They all ate cake and enjoyed games and balloons and had a great afternoon - thank you Stella!
And - here is a photo of Baraka....he is still in hospital and still healing - but I managed to get a semi-smile on camera! He is eating well and gaining weight and now playing and altogether a much happier little man.

Thursday, March 08, 2012- Miracle Musa
Musa Miracle came to Forever Angels Baby Home on May 6th 2009. When he arrived he was in a very bad way - severely malnourished and covered in scars from the physical abuse and neglect he had suffered at the hands of his Mother.
On arrival he was diagnosed and treated for Malaria, Sickle Cell Anaemia and Severe Malnutrition. His frail little body was covered in scars and he had bruising around his neck. His hands and feet were swollen and he struggled to hold up his head and stay awake.
Back in 2009, after taking Musa into our care, I wrote on my blog, "I guess we will never know what Musa has endured in his little life – and I can only wish that he one day forgets."
Today, after being in our care for three years and turning into THE most caring, loving, sensitive and happy boy in the world, I think I can safely say, that Musa WAS able to forget.
Today, we said 'goodbye' to our beautiful little boy as he joined a family at Mavuno Village. He became 'brother Musa' to Pili, Bianca, Michael, Sammy and Aika (other flown Forever Angels children) and 'son' to John and Milka.
I LOVE this little boy. He is like my shadow. Wherever I turn at the Baby Home, he is there, lips puckered, arms outstretched, waiting for a kiss and a hug! He has spent a huge amount of time in my office over the last few months and I will miss him with all my heart. Musa recently decided (and rightly so!) that it was HIS turn to get a family, and every single day he would ask me when his family would be coming. It was heartbreaking to have to answer him with uncertainty. When we finally realised that adoption was not possible for him, we have been holding out and hoping and praying for a space to come in the Mavuno House....and today it did!
Musa was OVER THE MOON to finally get his chance at having his 'happy ending' and within about 10 seconds of arriving - he was racing around with the other kids, climbing the bunk beds, singing, dancing and already a part of the family!
He was too 'busy playing' to even come and give us a goodbye hug - but you know what - that makes it a perfect goodbye for me. He was happy and comfortable and secure and that is SO much easier to walk away from.
This little boy came back from the brink of death and despair three years ago because of the love and care he got at Forever Angels - and today, seeing him so settled and happy in his new family is just heart-warming.
Musa's surname is 'Miracle'. Meghan named him before we even know he would pull through and survive his trauma. I LOVE that name. To me, this little boy is one of life’s true miracles. He was so badly abused and neglected, he almost died....and yet meeting this little boy today - you would have NO idea he had ever suffered in this way. He is happy, loving, intelligent, caring, sociable – he truly IS a miracle!
I sure will miss this little guy at the Baby Home but I couldn't be happier about his future. Musa is a GREAT kid and he has a happy and secure future at Mavuno Village.
We are of course sad to say goodbye to this incredible little boy – he is part of our lives and a HUGE part of the Baby Home - but we are thrilled that he finally has the family he so deserves and which he craved for, for so long.
Goodbye Musa - we love you.
It seems slightly ironic, that in the week we are preparing to say ‘goodbye’ to Musa, we receive another little boy – in an equal, if not worse abused and neglected state.
Yesterday, when I met Baraka, my heart bled for him and I lay awake all night wondering what this poor baby has been through in his short life. I have been hoping and praying that he pulls through and survives this trauma to finally learn what love is, but yesterday, at times, I had my doubts.
Reading Musa’s life book with him this morning on the way to Mavuno, and seeing the contrasting photos of him, so sick and abused, when he arrived at Forever Angels three years ago – gave me hope that Baraka will also forget and learn to trust and love again.
Please keep this innocent, yet deeply traumatised little boy in your thoughts and hope that he will be as resilient as Musa was.
Musa – you are my Miracle Man and I will NEVER forget you or stop loving you. I hope that receiving Baraka at the same time that you left us, is some sort of sign that the miracle of your strength and fight and resilience will work for Baraka too....and in your honor we are going to name him - Baraka Miracle.
Again - the Baby Home emotional roller coaster has drained me this past week. The goodbyes and hellos and heartbreaks and joys are sometimes so overwhelming that they seem surreal. |

- A Sick Little Boy
Meet 18 month old Baraka (yet another Baraka for the Baby Home – number 6 in fact!)
This little guy makes for a very sad story – and I am sure we do not even know the half of it yet.
Baraka was abandoned about 6 months ago but has only just come to the attention of Forever Angels after a referral from Mavuno Village.
We are still not sure how or why Baraka's health condition is as severe as it is – but the poor little boy is severely malnourished, covered in septic open wounds and burns, severely anaemic and sick with a very high count of malaria.
He is a very fragile little thing, and obviously in serious amounts of pain and discomfort. However, like all children here, he has fight in him yet - he is eating by himself, sitting up for short periods of time and answering questions by raising his eyebrows for a yes.
Baraka is now in the care of Selina (one of our Baby Home Mammas) who is staying at Bugando Hospital with him and we hope his external wounds will soon heal and he will gain strength and more importantly, start to trust people again.
Sadly – Tanzanian Doctors are going on strike again today as the Government have not listened to any of their requests…..so we are not sure if he will get much care and we may just have to bring him home to Forever Angels and do the best we can for him here.
This little boy has had a miserable existence over the last few months and has endured more than most of us would ever have to. It breaks my heart to see him, and to look into the eyes of a child who has, quite literally, given up hope of ever knowing love.
But we will give this little man the best possible care – good food, medication and so much love that I DO believe he will heal and will learn to laugh and smile.
It never rains but it pours here – within an hour of Selina being in Bugando with Baraka, 2 more orphans were placed with her, and a third was about to be brought!
Meet Happiness and Edson – both about 18 months old, unrelated and both abandoned yesterday somewhere in Mwanza!
And then there is baby Noella, a 2 month old boy (who’s psychiatric Mum died yesterday and has no other known relatives) - she will be sharing their bed within the next few hours I am sure. I am guessing all of these will be admitted to the Baby Home at some point in the next few days - but even if they are not, Selina is giving them food and love until a plan is made for them.
I would just like to say a public thank you to my friend Rob Peck. Rob is an incredible Doctor at Bugando and has, over time, become a family friend. I always feel guilty ‘pestering’ him about my children when he already works so hard at Bugando – saving lives and teaching Doctors here on a daily basis – but he always comes to see my children when I am desperate and need some advice and encouragement.
Thank you Rob for taking the time (yet again!) to visit little Baraka yesterday and for giving me hope that this little guy will be ok. |

Friday, March 02, 2012- Minus Three, Plus One.....makes 57!
This morning, our beautiful triplets, Hamisi, Hussein and Hassan went home to live with their Mum.
The triplets have been at the Baby Home for 5 months and they are now healthy babies of normal weight and eating solid food.
The boys on arrival in October 2011
And today!
Forever Angels Outreach programme has provided their Mum with a house very close to the Baby Home, as well as large bags of charcoal which she can sell to sustain herself and her boys.
Taking care of 7 months old triplets is very hard work – so Forever Angels will continue to monitor the boys and will support their Mum with milk and medical care whenever necessary.
Goodbye beautiful boys – we are so happy that you are now back where you belong with your Mum.
Our numbers didn't reduce for long though.....within half an hour of them leaving, we got a call from Social Welfare to ask us to go to collect a new baby - yet another boy!
Meet 6 week old Briton Obed. Briton's Mum sadly died two days after giving birth to him, and his young father is not able to care for such a small baby. Briton's Dad will visit him regularly and he will take his son home once he is eating solid food and walking. |

Wednesday, February 29, 2012- Thank you 'Connect Group' of MwanzaI just wanted to make a public 'Thank you' to some very special people in Mwanza - the 'Connect Group'. Some are friends of mine, one is a volunteer at the Baby Home, one is my child's teacher, and some of the members, I have never even met - but this evening they brought an incredibly thoughtful 'gift basket' full of goodies for my family to say 'thank you for our work' at Forever Angels.
It was incredibly touching and we really appreciate their kindness. Thank you so much. XX |

- Welcome Boniface - back to 59
Meet our latest addition to our ever growing family.....Boniface Phabian.
Boniface is about 18 months old (probably more like 2 years) but weighs only 5kg. He is very malnourished and suffering from immune deficency but he still found a lot to smile about this evening, bless him!
Boniface was abandoned a few weeks ago and no one has returned for him so it is unlikely that they now will. Perhaps they were just desperate and seeking help as he is clearly ill?
Mabula will go to clinic tomorrow and will be on medication very soon. In the mean time, his litte tummy is full tonight, he is being rocked to sleep by one of my Mamma's and he is already loved here.
On a sad note - my sweetheart Mabula - who has come on SO much in 3 weeks, is still lacking in one area. He eats well, he is gaining weight, he is smiling and laughing and he is even starting to walk.....but we have still not heard one sound come out of him.
I thought he may be deaf when he first arrived, but sometimes very traumatised children shut themselves out from the outside world and can be unresponsive for a while. We have seen this before. But Mabula has healed in every other way and still no sign of words from him.
Today I took him into my office (the only semi-quiet place in the Baby Home) and played a few games with him. I am totally convinced that he is completely deaf. He did not respond or turn to any loud noises at all.
This would be so tragic for this wonderful little boy - as the facilities here are non existant. We will try to get him a proper hearing test somehow in the very near future....but in the mean time - please keep this georgus little boy in your thoughts and hope and pray there is another explanation.

Sunday, February 26, 2012- New Staff...
With so many children at the Baby Home now, we decided to appoint a few more staff to care for them. On Saturday, Lilian, Josephine and I interviewed about 25 ladies for the job.
I LOVE interviewing in this country - you just never know what to expect. I have been amazed numerous times during interviews for the Baby Home and seen and heard things including:
* prospective employees falling asleep while waiting to be interviewed (when they are in the garden surrounded by children) * answering their phones DURING an actual interview and then continuing to have a long conversation! * people who don't speak for the entire interview except for answering with 'yes' or 'no' * prospective employees who didn't show up, but didn't tell us and instead sent their neighbour who pretended to be them! * a number of people who told us that if a child cried too much they would beat it with a stick....or breast feed it! * large numbers of people who do not smile throughout the entire interview *......and my favourite - one lady who told me they don't actually like children at all but needed money so could I give them a job please! Brilliant.
In spite of all this, we did find a few GREAT ladies and we employed four to join us at the Baby Home. Meet:
Martha
Penuila
Tatu
(and I do not yet have a photo of Winnifrida)
Zawadi and Musa were very happy to go for their naps today - usually they stay up and do jigsaws or play with Volunteers when the younger children have a mid morning sleep - but the new bunkbeds had them very keen to nap today!!

Friday, February 24, 2012- A Happy Ending for Lilian, Mabula and More Chaos!
On February 24th 2012, after being at the Baby Home for just 3 weeks, we got a call from Social Welfare to say that Lilian's Mum had come to find her.
I had a wonderful last few minutes with her in my car - she cooed away quite happily in the front seat all the way to Social Welfare!
It appears that Lilian's real name is Maggie – and she was not an abandoned child after all. It seems that her Mum had trusted her baby girl into the care of a neighbour for a few hours while she attended a funeral - but the neighbour had not taken good care of her at all - and had somehow 'left' her in town!
Thankfully, despite a traumatic few weeks for her Mum with Police investigations, Mum and her baby are now happily reunited and we are thrilled that Lilian (Maggie) has her family back.
Goodbye beautiful girl – we wish you love and happiness always.
Mum and daughter happily reunited!
I promised to post 'before and after' photos of Mabula a few days ago - and here they are:
On February 6th.............and on February 20th!
This little boy came to us half starved and so weak and sickly. He has been on a high protein diet for the past 2 weeks, eating hourly - and now look at him! he has gained over 2 kilos and is so much healthier and happier.
This little guy's smile lights up any room - he is now starting to walk with support, plays and grins non stop. We love you Mabula - what a difference some love and a bit of good food makes!
And finally - here are some photos of the new garden shades and seating area we have recently had made:
Shaded area number 1
....and number 2
...with a seating area (not yet painted!)
....and a few photos of today's bed moving and wall knocking down fiasco!!
When the builder turned up this morning at 8am with a VERY small hammer in preparation to knock down a very BIG wall - I have to say, I was a little skeptical! But, he chipped away (ALL day!) and we now have one large toddler bedroom, with new bunkbeds for all!
Before - the walls we knocked down.....
After - one big room!
New Bunk Beds for all!
Tonight the children were all pretty excited to be going to bed so that's good - the dust and angst was worth it!
